Enforcement actions completed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during the 2011 fiscal year resulted in agreements by alleged environmental violators to implement $19 billion in pollution control measures, the agency announced in its recently released annual report on enforcement and compliance for FY 2011. EPA’s enforcement actions during FY 2011 also resulted in levies of $168 million in civil penalties and the prevention of 1.8 billion pounds of pollution from entering the environment, the agency said. In the area of criminal enforcement, EPA completed cases amounting to $35 million in fines and restitution, $2 million in court-ordered environmental projects, and 89.5 years of incarceration for environmental criminals. According to the agency, one settlement reached in FY 2011, with the Tennessee Valley Authority, will lead to annual health benefits valued at $27 billion and provide $350 million for beneficial environmental projects.
