James W. Sewall Co. (Old Town, ME), a 130-year-old forestry and natural resources consultancy, announced that it has formed a new Environmental Sciences Group to provide services in the area of water resources and water quality management to government, industrial, and commercial clients. Jeffery Kahl will direct the new unit, which will integrate Sewall’s expertise in engineering, geographic information systems (GIS) mapping, and natural resources management towards the implementation of large-scale projects in stormwater and watershed management, water quality monitoring, and environmental assessment, planning, and permitting. “Water resources are the basis for assessment in most environmental regulations, but the latest research methods are rarely used,” said Kahl, who joined Sewall in April 2011 after serving as founding director of the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory and Senator George Mitchell Center at the University of Maine and of the Center for the Environment at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. “There are newer, less-expensive methods to manage stormwater, for example, than the mainstream pavement, pipe, and pond approach.”
